Latex Balloon Guide: Sizes, Finishes and How Many You Need
Latex balloons are the building blocks of most party decorations. Choosing the right sizes and finishes makes the difference between a flat-looking display and one that looks professionally styled.
Common sizes and what they're for
- 5 inch: tiny gap fillers for garlands, and stuffing inside bobo balloons.
- 10 inch: the everyday party balloon, good for bunches and ceilings.
- 12 inch: slightly larger and fuller; the main size in most garlands.
- 18 inch: big statement balloons that add drama to garlands and arches.
- 36 inch: giant balloons for photos and centrepieces.
The quoted size is the maximum. For garlands, inflating some balloons a little smaller gives a more natural mix.
Finishes
- Standard / matte: soft, flat colour. Pastels and earthy tones like sage and sand are popular for weddings and baby showers.
- Metallic / pearl: a soft sheen that catches the light.
- Chrome: a mirror-like shine in gold, silver and rose gold, perfect as accents.
- Confetti: clear balloons with confetti inside for a playful look.
How many do I need?
- Balloon bunch for a table: 5–7 balloons.
- Ceiling balloons: roughly one helium balloon per half square metre for a full look.
- Garland: most kits of 100–120 balloons make around 3–4 metres. See our balloon garland guide.
Tips for longer-lasting balloons
- Air-filled latex lasts days or even weeks indoors; helium-filled latex usually lasts less than a day unless treated.
- A balloon brightener spray restores shine to latex that has gone cloudy.
- Keep balloons away from heaters, sharp edges and direct sun.
